HOST AN EVENT

Create a deeper involvement with the SCTE Foundation by hosting your own fundraising event. Whether you're an industry corporation seeking to expand your involvement; a philanthropic or educational organization that shares similar goals with the SCTE Foundation; a successful individual looking to giving back to the industry; or even an SCTE Chapter hoping to one day improve the career of its SCTE members, you can organize and host your own event to raise funds for the SCTE Foundation.

Why host a fundraising event?

Any industry group can get involved by hosting special event fundraisers. Benefits of these events are substantial—not only to you as the organizer to gain industry recognition but to participants who develop camaraderie and make new business connections. Plus, the majority of the net revenue raised at your event will go directly to support the vital programs and services of the SCTE Foundation. There is no right or wrong way to design a fundraising activity. The goals are always the same—to raise money for the Foundation’s worthy mission and to increase awareness. The possibilities are endless.

Start planning—Choose a fundraising event idea.

There are many formats and types of events or activities that can create excitement and build awareness for supporting the SCTE Foundation. Industry organizations and SCTE Chapters can conduct any of the ideas below or suggest their own to aid fundraising efforts and help the Foundation reach its goals.
  • Prize Raffle or Ticketed Drawings: Cable product or service giveaways; travel package to corporate headquarters with factory tour; technology or electronics products such as TV, PDA, smartphones or tablets
  • Auctions: Cable products, technology education training; bachelor or bachelorette auctions; executive auction
  • Contests or Competitions: Sports tournaments such as golf, softball, or bowling; run/walk events; cable technology knowledge or skills challenges; marathons such as running, exercising, dancing or golf; scavenger hunt/road rally
  • Food and Dining Events: Formal catering luncheons or evening reception; celebrity cook-off; wine tasting tour or wine and cheese party; BBQs, picnics, or dinners; charity ball or dinner dance
  • Educational Events: Technology training event; industry expert presentation; author book signing;  plant/factory tour
  • Arts and Entertainment Events: Art show or sale; benefit concerts or performances; boat cruise; museum event or historical tour; sporting events such as a baseball or basketball games; TV show season or series finales; movie event

Use these fundraising tips.

Get Started.  Make the commitment and set a goal. Fundraising is fun, but it can also be considerable work. You may want to start small and expand on a successful event. Reach for success, but be prepared to make the time commitment to hit your target.
 
Brainstorm.  What type of event will work best in your industry organization or SCTE Chapter? What time of day or year is most advantageous for your fundraiser? Who will be targeted to attend or participate?
 
Develop a Plan.  Start by looking at a calendar and break down your fundraising goal into smaller goals. Outline and schedule due dates and do your best not to procrastinate. Successful fundraising is planned and intelligently executed.
 
Inspire Others.  Share with your potential donors why funding is important to you. They will be moved to help by your passion and commitment. If you are finding it difficult to ask for donations, remember, you are not asking for a contribution for yourself, but you are asking on behalf of those in need and to improve the industry as a whole.
 
Follow Through.  This element is key to reaching your goal. Make sure that inquiries and requests for more information don't get lost in the shuffle. Don't be afraid to send a reminder to your supporters letting them know that there is still an opportunity to give. Follow up with individuals who have pledged to help and always remember to thank donors.
